Does censorship help society or cause more harm?

If we lived in a well educated and at least semi refined society i would say is causes more harm. Unfortunantly there are a lot of very crude, rude, abusive, ignorant, self serving people out there that think speaking their mind before engaging there brain is protected under the freedom of speach while never haveing the slightest notion of what the freedom of speach in the constitution is really surposed to protect. In this society censorship helps protect those who can simply not manage to engage there brain before opening their mouth and it is a shame we have become such a society.
